 The life of Howard Phillips Lovecraft was, almost impossibly, even weirder than his fiction: His father was committed to an asylum for the Cat Halloween holiday shirt it is in the first place but last five years of his life after a psychotic episode, and with his mother lapsing into a state of permanent grief, Lovecraft was largely raised by his grandmother and grandfather, who encouraged him to read “weird fiction” (Lovecraft was reading and writing at the age of three)—a horror-like genre of the time that largely eschewed ghosts and vampires for tentacled, supernatural monsters, which emerged in his fiction decades later. When his grandmother died when he was five, Lovecraft became utterly terrified by the black mourning dresses that the ladies of the house wore and began experiencing nightmares where he was tormented by creatures he called “night-gaunts,” who would, he later wrote, “whirl me through space at a sickening rate of speed, the while fretting and impelling me with their detestable tridents.” Good times.
